Mark your calendars! Lt.
Governor Barbara Lawton’s
When Women
Thrive, Wisconsin Thrives!
March 21, 2005 The WW=P Young Leadership Summit will be a day to network and share information with peers, current public servants and elected officials coming from every part of Wisconsin. We will hear stories of diverse career paths in public service, unexpected opportunities for leadership, and train to ensure that our own schools and communities support the success of young women. We will leave with a better understanding of government and state agencies’ functions. We will be empowered to set high goals for our future successes. We will learn and model the skills necessary to assume leadership wherever we may live, study and work. There will be plenary sessions focused on young women’s leadership development and civic engagement, a career fair, a panel presentation of young women in public service, and Title IX training. Join us to tool up Wisconsin’s first pipeline/network for young women headed toward public service: · Meet a mentor to learn from. · Fire up with stories from a young woman who has led on the national level · Cultivate leadership skills and learn where you can try them out. · Drive home new ideas to open doors for young women in your community. · Connect to a statewide power grid of leaders. . . . and we’ll turn it on! Youth Leadership Summit Audience Young persons (high school juniors and seniors and college students) interested in increasing women’s leadership in Wisconsin public service. Vision and History of Young Leadership Summit WW=P was designed from the beginning to engage women (and the men who admire them) of all ages in our work. State Superintendent Libby Burmaster named Young Leaders from every region of the state to serve on the Steering Committee for two reasons: to include a youthful perspective in our strategic thinking and to ensure generational continuity in women’s leadership in our state. One of those young women, Melinda McNett of Wisconsin Rapids, expressed her concern that there were few opportunities for high school girls to envision themselves in influential positions of public service, be it as elected officials or in government careers. She suggested a day in Madison that would allow them to learn more, how to plan toward taking advantage of these opportunities, and the chance to meet women who would serve as role models and perhaps even mentors. Melinda’s invitation to you: “It has been said, ‘The best way to predict the future…is to create it.’ In today’s society, many young people are charged with the enthusiasm and energy to create tomorrow’s government and civil service. Often times, these young leaders do not have a source to lead them in the direction of where the path to change may lead. This March, young leaders from the State of Wisconsin will have the incredible opportunity to participate in the first ever “Young Leaders Summit” in conjunction with the Wisconsin Women Equals Prosperity Initiative. This summit will produce the next generation of leaders in government and civil service. I strongly believe that by exposing today’s youth leaders to further career exploration and exciting new experiences, our society in guaranteed a commitment of excellence and a strong future. Young leaders will predict the future of tomorrow by creating it today. Melinda and a dynamite team of high school and college women proudly announce the WW=P Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) to be held March 21st in Madison. The Summit will be open to all youth, but with a special emphasis on women who are high school juniors and seniors and college/university students.
